There is nothing worse than spending three hours editing a viral masterpiece, only to upload it to TikTok and realize your punchline is completely hidden behind the "Share" button. Discover the exact 9:16 dimensions and map out the 2026 UI Safe Zones to guarantee your content looks flawless.

Introduction: The Vertical Video Era

TikTok didn't just change social media; it fundamentally changed how we record the world. By forcing users into a full-screen, vertical scrolling experience, TikTok killed the horizontal 16:9 video format for short-form content.

Because TikTok commands the entire screen of a user's smartphone, formatting is a high-stakes game. If your aspect ratio is wrong, the app will wrap your video in ugly black bars, instantly signaling to the user that your content is low-effort or repurposed from another platform. Furthermore, TikTok heavily overlays its own buttons and text on top of your video. If you don't design around these "Safe Zones," your critical captions will be unreadable.

Core TikTok Specifications

Before you open your video editor, ensure your project sequence is set to the following strict parameters:

  • Ideal Resolution: 1080 x 1920 pixels
  • Aspect Ratio: 9:16
  • Maximum File Size (iOS): 287.6 MB
  • Maximum File Size (Android): 72 MB
  • Supported Formats: MP4, MOV

(Note: If you are uploading a static image or a Carousel to TikTok, use our TikTok Image Tool to crop your graphics to exactly 1080x1920 before uploading).

The UI Safe Zone (The Most Important Rule)

Even if your video is perfectly formatted to 1080x1920, you can still fail the TikTok algorithm if you ignore the User Interface (UI).

What is a Safe Zone?

A Safe Zone is the area in the exact center of the screen that is guaranteed not to be covered by TikTok's app buttons, captions, or usernames. If you place your face or your text outside of this zone, the viewer's experience will be ruined.

The Top & Bottom Margins

  • The Top 15%: Do not put text near the very top of the screen. This area is often covered by the "Following / For You" tabs, or obscured by the physical notch/camera cutout on modern smartphones.
  • The Bottom 20%: This is the most dangerous area. TikTok places your username, your video caption, any hashtags, and the scrolling audio track name at the bottom of the screen. Keep all hard-coded video subtitles far above this area.

The Right-Side Danger Zone

  • The Right 15%: The entire right edge of the screen is occupied by the Profile icon, the Like button (heart), the Comment button, the Bookmark button, and the Share button. Never place text or crucial visual information on the right side of the screen.

The Golden Rule: Keep your subject's face, your graphics, and your text confined to the central 65% of your 9:16 canvas.

How to Repurpose 16:9 Video for TikTok

Many podcasters and YouTubers attempt to upload their existing widescreen (16:9) content directly to TikTok. This is a massive mistake. To succeed on a vertical platform, you must adapt the media.

The Cropping Method (Recommended)

Take your 16:9 horizontal video and use an editing tool to "punch in" and extract a 9:16 vertical slice from the center of the frame. This fills the smartphone screen entirely, providing the immersive experience TikTok users expect. While you will lose the visual information on the far left and right of your original video, it is the only way to achieve high retention on the platform.

The Letterbox Method (Not Recommended)

If you upload a 16:9 video directly without cropping it, TikTok will shrink the video until the width fits the screen, and fill the massive empty spaces at the top and bottom with solid black bars. This is called Letterboxing. Users actively scroll past letterboxed videos because they feel like advertisements or lazily repurposed content.

Formatting TikTok Carousels

TikTok isn't just for video anymore. The platform heavily pushes "Carousels"—a series of static images that users can swipe through, accompanied by a trending sound.

The formatting rules for Carousels are exactly the same as video. Every image in your Carousel should be 1080 x 1920 pixels. If you upload a square graphic, TikTok will add blurry backgrounds to the top and bottom to force it into a vertical shape, which looks incredibly unprofessional. Use our Aspect Ratio Cropper to format every image perfectly before building your Carousel.

Conclusion

TikTok is an unforgiving platform. If your formatting is slightly off, the algorithm will bury your video. By respecting the 9:16 aspect ratio, hitting the 1080x1920 resolution, and keeping your text strictly within the central Safe Zones, you give your content the best possible chance to go viral.
