Snapchat Image and Video Dimensions

Snapchat uses a single 9:16 vertical aspect ratio (1080×1920 pixels) for all content types — Snaps, Stories, Spotlight, and most ad formats. This consistency makes Snapchat one of the simplest platforms to create content for: one format fits everything.

Individual Snaps display at full screen on the recipient's device. Stories appear in a vertical feed at the same 9:16 ratio. Spotlight — Snapchat's TikTok-style discovery feed — also uses 1080×1920. The only exception is Snapchat's native camera capture, which may include device-specific black bars if the camera sensor doesn't match 9:16 exactly.

  • Snaps (Photo and Video): 1080 × 1920 pixels at 9:16 ratio
  • Stories: 1080 × 1920 pixels at 9:16 ratio
  • Spotlight: 1080 × 1920 pixels at 9:16 ratio
  • Geofilters: 1080 × 1920 pixels with transparent areas
  • Lenses: 1080 × 1920 pixels (built with Lens Studio)
  • Profile Photo: 180 × 180 pixels (square, circular crop)

Snapchat Safe Zones

Snapchat's interface overlays significant UI elements on your content. The top of the screen shows the time, battery, and navigation buttons. The bottom displays the chat bar, story progress, and interactive elements. Content placed in these areas gets partially or fully obscured.

For Snaps, keep all critical content — faces, text, logos, CTAs — in the center 70% of the frame. This leaves approximately 290px of padding at the top and bottom of a 1920px tall canvas. Text overlays should be placed in the upper or middle third, avoiding the bottom quarter where Snapchat's chat and replay buttons appear.

For Stories, the bottom overlay is more aggressive — Snapchat shows the sender's name, a progress bar, and a reply field. Plan for the bottom 20% of your Story to be covered by UI. The top 10% shows the time and navigation.

Snapchat Ad Specifications

Snapchat offers several ad formats, each with specific requirements. Snap Ads appear between Stories and support video up to 3 minutes. Collection Ads show multiple product tiles below a hero video. Story Ads appear as tiles in the Discover feed. All ad formats use the standard 1080×1920 canvas.

Snap Ads: 1080×1920 video, 3-180 seconds, MP4 or MOV. File size under 1GB recommended. Include a clear call-to-action in the center frame — avoid the bottom 25% where the swipe-up prompt appears. Collection Ads: Same video spec with product tiles. Story Ads: 1080×1920 video (vertical) or 1920×1080 (horizontal for Discover tiles).

Best Practices for Snapchat Content

Snapchat users consume content quickly — Snaps disappear after viewing, Stories last 24 hours. Design for instant comprehension. Use bold, large text that can be read in under a second. Place your main subject in the center of the frame where it survives all UI overlays.

For Spotlight (Snapchat's creator program), follow TikTok-style best practices: hook viewers in the first 2 seconds, use trending audio, and keep videos under 60 seconds for highest completion rates. Spotlight content must be uploaded directly through Snapchat's creator tools.

  • Design for the center 70% frame — overlays cover top and bottom edges
  • Use bold text at large sizes — small text is unreadable on mobile
  • Keep videos under 60 seconds for best completion rates
  • Shoot in good lighting — Snapchat's compression handles well-lit content much better
  • Test your content by sending a Snap to yourself before publishing to Stories

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common Snapchat sizing mistake is creating content at the wrong aspect ratio. Horizontal or square content uploaded to Snapchat gets aggressively cropped or displays with large black bars. Always shoot and export in 9:16 vertical format.

Another frequent issue is placing critical elements too close to the edges. Text in the bottom quarter gets covered by Snapchat's chat bar. Faces in the top tenth get hidden behind the time display. Logos placed at the extreme edges may be partially cropped on different phone screen sizes.
